Energy Champions 2008

Name – Bhakti Lakhani
Class – VIII
School – Greenlawns High School, Mumbai

I reduced my electricity consumption by 12% by following simple steps like, changing  to CFL bulbs, keeping AC at 240C, minimizing use of oven, opening the refrigerator less, keeping windows open for cross ventilation – so no need of fans, switching off TV / Computer instead of keeping it on standby and forcing every one in the house to consume electricity efficiently.  I also sensitized 20 friends of mine to take this pressing noble cause further.

Important Energy Conservation tips such as replacing regular bulbs with CFLs, switching off the lights & equipments from the MAIN supply, use of natural light are some of the key steps which I am practicing at home.

In order to sensitize my neighborhood and friends, I did this – I stay at Alica Nagar Society, Kandivli (E), Mumbai.  I, along with my Dad, put posters all around the society and roped in nearly 75 to 100 families to participate in this energy conservation sensitization session.  The response to the energy conservation program was really motivating; we even distributed the energy conservation kit in the neighbourhood.

I did the following things to become an Energy Champion:
I put my AC on at 24 degrees.
I also reduced the use of AC at home.
I urged my mother to use the washing machine and iron before 10 am in the morning in order to reduce peak hour load.
I switched off the lights and fans of my room and house whenever not in use.
I did not use lights during the day.
I spoke to around 100 people in my society about the importance of energy conversation and shared tips on how to conserve the use electricity.
I also spoke to my relatives and cousins in Rajasthan during the Diwali vacations about energy conservation and they all promised to conserve energy.
I have put the Energy Conservation Posters in my society given to me by Tata Power.

I don’t like wasting resources and saving is my passion. My father always says “ SAVING OF ENERGY IS AS GOOD AS PRODUCING THE ENERGY” & “SAVING OF MONEY IS AS GOOD AS EARING”.
I and my family start the day with the sun rise and try to close all activities with the sunset to use of natural light to its maximum.
After attending the Tata Power Energy Conservation Program, I insisted my father to replace regular bulbs with CFL and copper choke to electronic choke to reduce the energy consumption and he did it.
I insisted my family member to be in one room only so that the lights and Fan of other rooms can be kept off.
I informed my father that here after, we should buy only electrical appliances having certificate of five star on energy consumption.
I am canvassing the energy conservation methods to my relatives, friends & their parents in our neighbourhood & residential colony.
